Innovation & Design Institute Logo Study
Programs Used | Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop.
This is a logo study that led to the brand package for the Innovation and Design Institute (ID), which includes a modern and playful primary and secondary logo, a distinctive social media brand mark, and a plaid-inspired pattern that blends traditional and modern elements.
The client needed a new name and brand package to better understand how they would rebrand.
Logo Design Process
Sketch
Every great design starts with a simple sketch derived from many iterations. This is where ideas are free to flow, evolve, and take shape. After doing over 100 iterations, I settled on the simple ID logo where the “I” slices through the “D.”
Typography
I selected the Cooper Hewitt typeface for its clean lines and contemporary edge. It served as the starting point for this design, so I could use it as a template to ensure that the logo would be based on a modern type.
Line work
Pulling the type into Illustrator, I began the linework process. Using the pen tool, I started out with a rough outline of the design I wanted based on the “I” and “D” in the Cooper Hewitt type. Once I got an idea of scale, I refined it until the outline of my final logo was created.
Color
Color is one of my favorite parts of the logo design process! It shapes the heart of the logo and helps define the brand’s identity. For the Innovation and Design Institute, I wanted the palette to reflect both professionalism and creativity. I chose playful, vibrant colors that contrast with the logo’s modern simplicity, creating an intentional balance. I also carefully considered how the colors would interact with one another through overlays and varying opacity, which is essential in bringing this logo to life.
Final
For the final logo, I chose to keep the "D" solid while experimenting with the opacity of the "I" to create a sense of depth. This intentional contrast highlights the interplay between innovation and design in the brand, showcasing how both elements are seamlessly intertwined.
